![]() The version of Handbrake used in this tutorial is v1.6.1 which is the current stable release for March 2023. The video is encoded on a 2 year iMac with I7 processor. ![]() I played the media from a WD TV media player. The viewing position was about 10-12 feet back. THE TECHNICAL STUFF – My Test TV is a 42″ Samsung 1080 HD. THE GOAL – To produce the highest quality video with the smallest possible file size, whilst creating a 5.1 Digital Sound Track that is compatible with most players and TV’sĭISCLAIMER – This method will produce very nice quality videos, but may take SEVERAL hours to process each hour of video! Unfortunately, good quality video with small file size cant be done quickly, it just doesn’t work that way. When your cover art and other metadata is ready, write the metadata to the file by clicking the Play button at the top.1 Open source file in Handbrake and make sure you are on the “Summary” tabĢ Set file format to “MP4’ and deselect “Passthru Common Metadata”ģ Click “Dimensions” tab and set Resolution Limit to 1080p and leave Anamorphic as Automatic, leave cropping “Automatic” and borders “None”ĥ Leave Interlace Detection set to Default, De-interlace set to Decomb, and Preset at “Default”ħ Select “H.264 (x264)” from the Video Codec drop downġ0 Set “Encoder Preset” slider to “Very Slow”ġ3 Set “Encoder Level” to “4.1” – If this wont play on your system drop it back to “3.1”ġ4 Set the “Constant Quality” slider to “24”ġ5 In the “Additional Options” box add ref=5:bframes=5ġ7 Select the preferred 7.1 or 5.1 channel soundtrackġ8 Set “Codec” to “AC3” and the Bitrate to 448kbġ9 Set Mixdown to “5.1 Channels” and Samplerate to “48”Ģ1 Click the “X” in the circle at the right side to remove the subtitles track on Windows, or select “None” from dropdown on MacĢ3 Uncheck the “Create Chapter Markers” option if you don’t want them or leave it checked if you doĢ4 Give your output file a unique name and save it somewhere easy to findĢ5 Make a preset to save the settings and Press the Green “Start Encode” button. If AUTOTAG still doesn't work, you can download the film cover art yourself, and add it to the file by clicking Select File in the info tab.If AUTOTAG doesn't find the right data, make sure your title matches the movie title on iTunes, IMDB, and the other sources. This will search a few sources on the Internet based on the movie's file name, and write the file metadata based on that. The easiest thing to do is click AUTOTAG up at the top.Select whether this is a Movie, TV Show, Music Video or none of the above.Click the Folder button in the upper-right corner. ![]() Again, we're not asking you to install something that we ourselves don't use. Rename the file to only list the movie title and the year.Find the MP4 file that HandBrake created. We're done, but we can do a few more steps to make the movies easier to browse in a Plex library, or just in your file explorer. When that's done, that's it! Your file is now converted to MP4 format, so it can be played back on nearly every device. My system has a Ryprocessor with the stock speed and cooler, and it can encode a two-hour or so movie at lossless quality in about an hour. A "lower" quality may not look different compared to a lossless file, and it'll save a lot of time and space on your hard drive. How long the encode takes will depend on how beefy the CPU in your system is, as well as what quality you set the encode to. This is what we want, but you can still change some settings by clicking the Video tab. By default, HandBrake will encode the file as an MP4.Adjust the file name and location as you set fit.Open the MKV file that MakeMKV created.Download and install HandBrake - again, we use this on our computers. That can be played on most platforms, but an MP4 file is going to be supported on literally anything with a screen, and it'll require less processing power if you're going to have the file in a Plex server. As the name suggests, makeMKV just turns the file from the disk into an MKV file. ![]() We're done with the disk, but we can go a few steps further to make your movie or TV Show file a bit easier to playback.
